Looking back on the most recent humanitarian crises, it is clear that there must be a greater understanding of the need for adequate preparation and a quick and focused reaction to disasters, whether they are natural or man-made. In either case, each could lead to a complex emergency that dwarfs the initial problem. By providing practical expertise and examples of applied knowledge, the Disaster Management Training Course will equip humanitarian aid workers with the skills and tools needed in order to effectively respond to both natural and man-made disasters and resulting complex emergencies. The course utilizes existing strategies and tools, practical exercises, case studies, and interactive multicultural discussion to explore the key issues faced when providing assistance in disaster situations.

Methods include class facilitation and interactive presentations by experienced humanitarian aid workers and Fordham academic faculty. Additionally, students will engage in scenario exercises, group work, discussions, and participant case study presentations. Case study work introduces students to past disasters and crises. In addition to analyzing past mistakes, students are given a clear understanding of disaster management and risk reduction strategies. Students learn how to work with operational and planning teams at all levels, from local to international, and to understand the practical levels of preparedness that can be achieved and maintained. Students also gain the ability to critically appraise existing plans and provide reasoned and well-founded recommendations for improvement.

There is a course fee of $1,600 and students will earn two academic credit hours through the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Fordham University. This course can be taken independently or as part of the of the MIHA, Fordham University’s Master of Arts in Humanitarian Action. For those who do not wish to receive formal academic credit, the cost is $913 USD. Students who choose not to take the course for academic will receive a certificate of attendance for the program.
